You can be forgiven if you’re not up on the latest in airline uniforms. After all, the fact that British Airways is investing in brand-new uniforms in order to celebrate its 100th anniversary is not something that really has an impact on your day-to-day routine – unless you work for British Airways. Having said that, the new uniforms are an investment in British Airways’ workers.
In a statement announcing the uniforms, British Airways CEO Alex Cruz said that they will be “a visual representation of investment in our people.” He went on to say that he hopes employees are proud to wear the new uniforms because of what they say about the company they work for.
One of the lessons to be learned here is that uniforms mean something to workers. Even workwear uniforms, which are more utilitarian than anything else, say something to those wearing them. For one thing, they are a statement that indicates how much employers care about them.
Hiring a World-Class Designer
British Airways is pulling out all the stops for their 100-year anniversary uniforms, including hiring Oswald Boateng to design them. Bringing in a world-class designer is nothing short of the company saying they will spare no expense to get this right. They want their new uniforms to perfectly convey the British Airways message while simultaneously being something workers are proud to wear.
A small American company with a few dozen employees is not likely to go to the same lengths for new workwear uniforms, but that’s okay. A company doesn’t have to hire a world-class designer to still get a good-looking uniform that does what it’s supposed to do.

Function and Good Looks
It will be interesting to see what Boateng comes up with for British Airways. Sources say he will be working closely with company workers to find out what they need and want. Both are equally important. It is also important that British Airways employees have the opportunity to let their voices be heard.
If there’s one thing companies like Alsco have learned about workwear uniforms is that they have to be functional. A uniform that enhances a worker’s ability to do his or her job is one that will be well received. On the other hand, uniforms that inhibit worker productivity do not tend to go over very well.
Good looks are important as well. Workers should be proud of the uniforms they wear; they should not be ashamed of workwear uniforms they perceive as unattractive or even downright ugly. There is that fine line that should never be crossed.

It turns out that workwear uniforms are an investment. They are an investment in workers inasmuch as they show a company’s commitment to the people who do the work. Uniforms add value to a worker’s compensation by eliminating the need for that worker to provide his or her own clothing.
Uniforms are an investment in productivity as well. Uniforms that are functional and protective make it easier for employees to do what they’re paid to do. You can’t beat that with a stick.
Finally, uniforms are an investment in a company’s image. A good uniform enhances branding, creates an image of professionalism, and sets the company’s employees apart from all others. British Airways knows that all too well.
